Jordi Creed discusses TJ Perkins becoming WWE's First (Rebirth) Cruiserweight Champion On Wednesday night, viewers of the Cruiserweight Classic on the WWE Network were treated to a classic that did the tournament's name proud. TJ Perkins, an 18 year veteran of in ring competition squared off against Gran Metallik in the Finals after having defeated fan and bookie favorite Kota Ibushi in the semis earlier that night. All three of the matches that night in my opinion are match of the year contenders, whether it's Gran Metallik managing to best the best technical wrestler in the world Zack Sabre Jr, or whether it's either of TJPs matches, all three were outstanding. Also that night, Triple H unveiled the new Cruiserweight title, a beautiful belt with a purple strap that was awarded to TJ after he defeated Metallik in the last match of the night. Suffice to say, the Cruiserweight title is my new favourite belt in WWE. It has a silhouette reminiscent of a professional boxing title, which fully does justice to the competitive aura of the tournament and the division itself. For me, TJ was the perfect man to defeat Kota Ibushi and to win the entire tournament. Being relatively unknown in the mainstream wrestling world besides as the man behind the Manik persona in TNA, having TJ beat what the commentators called the best cruiserweight in the world allows WWE's first ever Cruiserweight champion to also be a star. WWE can claim they themselves have moulded. With plenty of years left in the business, TJP has the potential to be a massive part of WWE's future, especially with Triple H's influence within the company growing. Expect alot more big moments for TJ in his career, but until then, tune into Raw on Monday to experience the inception of the new Cruiserweight division and it's first ever champion, TJ Perkins.
