ZWrestleTalk's Triple Z wonders about the recent WWE Draft and how SmackDown's Commissioner and General Manager drafted completely wrong. Where do I even begin? The most anticipated WWE event in years that wasn't a PPV fell short. Was it the over-emphasis on SmackDown Live? Trust me WWE loves adding the extra titles... Remember RAW SuperShow? Did WWE do the draft on purpose to make Stephanie McMahon look smart? I mean RAW is and always will be WWE's premiere brand. I expected SmackDown to get a roster so good I would have to record it every week. Sadly that won't be the case. Even though SmackDown has the better authority figures it still isn't enough to make me watch. Let's take a look at some of RAW's and SmackDown's picks.
RAW Seth Rollins Charlotte Kevin Owens Brock Lesnar Roman Reigns Sasha Banks Finn Balor SmackDown Dean Ambrose John Cena AJ Styles Bray Wyatt Randy Orton Becky Lynch American Alpha RAW: First of all RAW has a Cruiserweight division so that already sells the program. Seth Rollins is WWE's next John Cena not Roman Reigns. RAW still has Roman Reigns which basically means they have a heat magnet. RAW also has the rights to Brock Lesnar, which Brock creates must see TV. (Another issue, Lesnar is on RAW but his opponent for SummerSlam is on SmackDown does WWE Creative even look at the matches they book?). RAW has Charlotte and Sasha Banks who are great wrestlers. RAW even got Kevin Owens and he is a great talent and will shine on RAW. I could go on about RAW and how they have the better show and roster. I mean Steph and Foley even drafted Finn Balor the most anticipated wrestler to debut on the main roster. SmackDown: Okay SmackDown has the champion but for how long? I mean I like Dean Ambrose but Seth Rollins should have the championship right now. Rollins got screwed by an injury which led to the rise of Roman Reigns. Ambrose can have his time in the sunshine. I feel WWE wants the title on RAW, the premiere brand, and they will get that this Sunday if they really want it. SmackDown does have some pluses like a solo Bray Wyatt, John Cena, AJ Styles, Becky Lynch, and American Alpha. The Women's division is surprisingly bright. Then everything goes down hill. Del Rio, Ziggler, and The Miz... Wait is this 2011 or something? Why is Kalisto here? He needs to be in that Cruiserweight divison. SmackDown will be watchable don't get me wrong but it will still have the younger sibling syndrome. Shane McMahon coming into WWE promised change. Looking at his SmackDown roster it isn't believable. This looks like a Stephanie McMahon roster not a Shane McMahon roster. The brand rivalry will be interesting. Honestly though the draft was strange. I mean there is no logic behind it or any of the picks. I mean Bayley not getting pick is just insulting. Yes NXT champions should be off limits but a former champion should of went pretty early. Especially someone as popular as her. This was the perfect opportunity to bring her up. The whole "She will be the surprise Sunday!" is idiotic. I mean RAW just signs a terrific wrestler only a couple days after the draft? What happens when Sasha picks Paige to be her partner, or even Nikki Bella even though that is highly unlikely. Is NXT saving her for Asuka VS Bayley 2? That is highly unlikely also. Yes SmackDown has former World Champions but RAW has the better show for the "Wrestling Fan." The concept of the WWE Draft is a confusing one. If ESPN and major outlets are covering your draft make it realistic. I don't think they did that. This could be a solid move for the WWE and it could get SmackDown on the rise again or it could just be a blunder. "What about the former stars returning to WWE?" Well that was another WWE blunder. I mean you couldn't poach anyone from Lucha Underground, TNA, or ROH. Heck what about your former Alumni's? Sadly were going to get Curt Hawkins and Rhyno. I mean seriously Curt Freaking Hawkins... WWE didn't use him well the first time. How will this be the same. The WWE Draft lead to interesting aftermath. It's interesting to think about the concept. Over analyze the draft but at the end of the day it is for the best. Just the logic behind it doesn't add up. I mean Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon brainstorming interesting ideas for RAW and we got Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan drafting Naomi, Natalya, The Uso's and Mojo Rawley. You have the "Ultimate Underdog" as your General Manager but he didn't draft like one. He didn't give anyone of underdog status a chance. I mean SmackDown needed some talent that would make me watch every week. AJ Styles will but the rest falls short. It isn't must see TV or at least it isn't yet. For now RAW is still WWE's priority.
